I have a IBM Thinkpad 560X laptop with no CD-ROM drive.

I am trying to figure out a way to back up the hard drive.

Most backup software needs a bootable CD-ROM drive.

This laptop can only boot from the floppy drive or a PCMCIA storage device.

Does anyone have suggestions for how to use zsplit to help back up the hard drive for this laptop over the network?

I currently have Debian installed on the laptop. |

 Hello virtusdraco,

you need a bootable linux disk and the pre-compiled binary package from device-image.de. So you have many choices to get an bootdisk..on way would be here to create the disk by yourself http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/Bootdisk-HOWTO/ or here http://www.linux.org/docs/ldp/howto/Bootdisk-HOWTO/.

Then you only need to setup the NIC and establish an connection to a other remote computer. You do not have a CD-ROM or so for PCMCIA? :-)

If your PCMCIA device has at least 50 - 60 MB space, you should consider to try the Damn-Small-Linux distribution (http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/). This is a very small bootable linux distro. After successfull booting, you should have access to the network. Next step, dowbload "zsplit" and ... thats all, you can transfer your backup-image to the other machine through the network.

Regards,

If you have an integrated nic, you can try the linbox rescue server.

The backup/restoration process uses a PXE boot.
